Today it feels like the lunatics finally took over the asylum.
Neither the LET or LPGA. Both professional bodies, control the Ricoh Women’s British Open, it is run by the LGU an amateur body.
Susan Simpson is head of golf operations at the LGU, many of you may remember her from the Charley Hull exclusion at the Curtis Cup?
Ms Hull was 1 of 5 amateur players invited to take part in the Kraft Nabisco in March, she was then told she would not be considered for Curtis Cup selection as there was to be a team practise in Nairn around the same time.
Ask yourself would a 15 year old learn more from playing in a major or a team get together?
This is the same Charley Hull who is currently lying tied 3rd in the British Open !
That sort of fills in a little of the background.
Today’s play was abandoned at the British Open, no one has a complaint with that, it was freak weather conditions, simple as that.
What beggars belief is that the players where “told” they had to tee off this morning!
By the time common sense kicked in and the players were taken off the course their combined score was 97, yes 97 over par according to Andrew Cotter of the BBC.
So the question has to be asked why was play allowed to get underway in the 1st place ?
Those “guinea pigs” who suffered this morning have at least had today’s scores nullified and start tomorrow from the same position they were after round 1.
The plan is all 144 players will play tomorrow off a 2 tee start, sound ok so far ?
Then on Sunday 36 holes will be played off a 2 tee start, with no redraw for round 4, kind of makes sense, yeah ?
BUT, and it’s a big BUT, the cut has been moved from 65 to 50! That is simply ludicrous!
Now the LGU have said prize money will still be paid to those from 51 to 65th & ties, but that’s not the point.
This is a MAJOR, majors are not about the money they are about the honour, the glory!
If the cut was made today 50th & ties is 54 player, 65th & ties is 73 players.
50 & ties are 4 shots off the lead, 65 & ties are 5, yes 5 shots off the lead.
Why cant the cut be left at 65 ? Seriously why ??
This decision robs hard working honest players from achieving their dream of becoming a major champion, its not about the money!
73 players are easily accommodated for 36 holes!
Its still not to late for the LGU to see common sense, is it ?
The losers in all this?
The player who are 65th & ties
The sponsors as it dilutes their final field
Oh yes and us, the fans! But do we count?
