Illogical Captain !

Imagine for 1 second you are a 15 year old girl, you are an extremely talented golfer, so talented you are ranked 15th in the world. You go to Florida during the British winter to keep your game sharp, so sharp in fact that you win a tournament in the Florida Orange Blossom Tour. You play so well that you get invited, as one of the worlds top five amateurs no less, to take part in the first ladies major of the year, The Kraft Nabisco in California.

Imagine that! 15 years old and the chance to play in a major with the likes of Matthew, Hjorth, Pettersen, Reid and the rest of your Solheim cup heroines ?

You would be on cloud 9.

Throw into the equation that this is a Curtis Cup year just think what that experience could bring to your side, think of all the former Curtis Cup players you could speak to and learn from, a win win situation?

Well you would have thought so.

In fact you don’t need to imagine this if you are Charly Hull. The 15 year old Woburn player is this person, a dream eh?

Well not until the LGU got involved.

The LGU have stated that only players taking part in a selection trial will be considered for the GB&I team, the selection trial takes place 23rd to 25th of March with the team being announced on the 26th, the Kraft starts on the 29th.

By accepting the invitation to the Kraft Ms Hull has “chosen to make herself unavailable for selection” really??

If I was the LGU I would have said “brilliant!” “Please go play in the Kraft your place in the team is cemented”, “Ask Karen Stupples what it was like to win the Cup”,

But maybe that’s just a wee bit to logical and sensible?


The last week has not been a good 1 for English lady amateurs.

With the USGA withdrawing 17 year old Lauren Taylor’s invitation to the US Open leaves a very very bad taste in everyone’s mouth, except the USGA that is.
Perhaps the LGU’s tome would have been better spent lobbying the USGA in reinstating Ms Taylor??

In a time when we all want to see golf grow we should be applauding Kraft Nabisco for the inclusion of the worlds leading amateurs in the major, but I cant help wonder how they feel about it now?

At last years RICOH you could hear the disappointment in the players voices in how the LGU at Carnoustie set up, the girls really wanted to see this brilliant course with a bit of teeth, instead it got dumbed down.

I would ask the LGU to sit down and take a long hard look at themselves.

This is a classic example of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

The priority for Nairn should have been to put out the STRONGEST GB&I Team available, that team should include Charly Hull.

Ladies amateur golf, in fact ladies professional golf for that matter, should be run for the benefit of the players and the game, not the administrators.
