Once again the Solheim Cup has developed into a drama and its only day 1.
There is just something about the Solheim Cup and controversy.
Yesterday at 15 during the Pettersen/Ciganda v Lewis/Thompson match Carlota hit her 2nd shot in to a red staked hazard.
Now given Suzann had hit her 2nd into a bunker it was a brainless shot but that’s a different story.
Lexi then hit her 2nd just short of the green.
Carlota’s ball was unplayable and that’s were the fun began.
Walking rules official Fraser Munro, of the LET, gave a ruling on the course, he was unsure so called on Brad Alexander of the LPGA to confirm, Alexander & Munro then gave the ruling to Ciganda and after her drop the ball was deemed in play.
No ifs, buts or maybes here, both officials got it wrong.
Now I am not going to bore you with the technicalities, but if you want to bore yourself look up rule 26.
Any objections to the drop should have been made to the officials at the time, but neither Lewis, Thompson, their caddies or any team USA representatives got involved with the ruling.
After 25 minutes they may have just lost the will to live, who knows, but some ones from team USA should have been there.
Once the groups teed off on 16 that should have been the end of the matter, but no.
After the round the excrement hit the fan.
Stacey Lewis complained about Munro using a laser and making the distance public knowledge, a legitimate complaint, IF made at the time Stacey not post round.
US captain Meg Mallon complained that the time it took for the ruling cost Team USA momentum, again a fair point and I agree with her 100%, but why not get involved at the time or at least insist that waiting groups got called through?
What’s worse this was not the only rules cock up of the day.
On 14 Lewis played out of turn, Pettersen asked the walking official to make her play it again, which is her right in match play, the official refused, why I have no idea but he did.
In 2000 at Loch Lomond when Annika Sorenstam chipped in on 13 Pat Hurst and Kelly Robins objected and with the backing of Pat Bradley Annika was forced to play her shot again, this killed any momentum Annika and Janice Moodie had at the time and they went on to lose 2&1.
So was the bad ruling on 15 karma for what happened on 14 ??
Also there was Cristie Kerr having her ball cleaned while marking it off the green, according to the golf channel guy with the group the official told her she could, but, in my opinion at least, that was a wrong ruling.
So now we enter day 2 and I think it will be as frosty as a morning breakfast after the husband has left the toilet seat up or not replaced the toilet roll he finished!
Yes things may seem polite, but behind the eyes will tell a different story and one more wee thing and BOOM explosion time.
As for 15? Why don’t they just put in 2 drop zones to the left and right of the tree? Or that too much like common sense??
Lets hope day 2 is about brilliant golf and nothing else.
