Lets here it for the girls

A few weeks ago, during the Open Championship, we had a media and political clamour on the Open being held at a men only club.

Many like me simply never attended on a point of principle, some politicians like wise and of course the main stream media made hay.

This week see the start of the Solheim cup in Denver, if the UK media is anything to go by you would never know!

I have seen more coverage on the 2024, yes 2024, than on this years Solheim.

The same main stream media who were condemning the R&A and Muirfield are reverting to, well, not interested in Womens golf.

Supporting the ladies professional game seems to simply too much effort for them.

I worked at the Ricoh Womens British Open this year and loved every minute of it, well most of it.

The vast majority of players were far more accessible to the public, took a bit more time in talking to them and genuinely seemed happy to do so.

Are the players good? Well no the vast majority are brilliant.

Is the product good? Yes the product is fantastic.

Is it a great experience for genuine golf fans? Yes it is.

So why does the main stream media continue to do exactly what they accused the R&A and Muirfield of, treating women golfers as second class citizens?

So for the first time ever I am going to ask you to do something.

If your national newspaper of choice is not covering the build up or the actual event then contact them and ask them why?

Ask them why they are taking an AP feed as actually sending a reporter out there to cover the event.

Now I said this at the time of Europe’s victory in Ireland, the LET dropped the ball.

For weeks afterwards every golfer was talking about that remarkable Sunday but the LET never took advantage of it.

We currently hold both the Curtis and Solheim Cup’s on this side of the pond, when did that last happen?

Again I think the R&A need a total change of attitude to womens golf, I don’t care what Peter Dawson says about money, this is not about money.

This is about giving a spotlight to the women’s game, to treat women golfers with the same respect as their male counterparts.

I hope this weeks competition is tight, I hope we have a climax like we did in Ireland and if we do I hope no one drops the ball this time.

Sky have a Sky ashes channel for the cricket this year, when theres no live cricket we have old highlights from years gone by.

Well here’s a thought, how about a Sky golf channel?

If we had a dedicated golf channel in the UK we could showcase the LET and LPGA coverage and give women’s professional golf the shot in the arm it needs!

And for those who think there is no “market” in th UK for women’s golf  go through golf fans twitter feed.

Week after week my time line is filled with people taking online feeds of LPGA events, the “market” is there, its just not there for an hours highlights at 1am!

Its worth remembering the golf major season is NOT over, is it?

Or has everyone forgot about the Evian?

The British media have!
