So Royal Troon is to have a "membership policy review" ahead of the 2016 Open Championship, let's look out the bunting!
I know many will celebrate, many will complain and sadly many won't give a jot.
As for me, I find it pathetically sad that this is even a news worthy story in 2015.
Our reigning monarch is a woman, the Scottish first minister is a woman, The Representation of the People act of 1918 gave woman, admiditaly over 30, the right to vote, which was 5 years before Arthur Havers won the Open at Troon, as it then was, in 1923.
Royal Troon is one of three men only clubs on the Open Rota, that's three out of ten or 30% !
Aye, just let me say that again, 30% !! That's 30% too much!
Would the R&A allow the Open to be hosted by clubs that allowed "white only" members ?
Would the R&A allow a club to host the Open if it refused to allow people of certain religion membership ?
To damn right it wouldn't, but women ??
Clubs with men only membership have not entered the 20th century never mind the 21st!
Is it not time for the R&A simply to say to clubs "in order to host the Open Championship clubs must not have membership restrictions based on gender, race or religion" ?
Replace Royal St George's with Royal Cinque Ports, replace Muirfield with North Berwick or Gullane, it's that simple.
Instead of congratulating clubs for breaking down gender biased memberships we should be asking why it's taken so darn long.
