“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others” maybe if Orwell was still alive he could change it to “All golfers are equal, but some golfers are more equal than others” ??
In 2005 in Jakarta Colin Montgomerie found himself in a really tough greendide bunker, the hooter went for lightening so the players leave their balls where they lay and evacuated the course. Returning the following day Monty’s ball had disappeared into the oblivion, Monty replaced the ball to where he “thought” his ball had been.
Now quite a few people phoned the European Tour to say the ball was not replaced where it had been but placed in a more “advantageous” position.
On reviewing the evidence the tour backed Monty, but after reviewing the tape himself Monty admitted he replaced the ball in the wrong spot but that it had not been intentional. As a result Monty donated his winnings to a local charity, but there was no DQ and as far as we, the public, are aware no disciplinary took place and any world ranking points he earned still stood.
When Tiger Woods took an illegal drop at the 15th at Augusta this year he was given a 2 stroke penalty, the following day.
At the BMW Masters this year Simon Dyson illegally used his ball to repair a spike mark, if you have seen the TV evidence there can be no argument about that, none.
Now as far as I can gather the penalty for doing this is a 2 stroke penalty, the same penalty as Tiger got for his illegal drop.
If Tiger was allowed to have a 2 stroke penalty the following day then Dyson should have, but Dyson was disqualified for signing for a wrong score because he never applied a 2 stroke penalty.
You would have thought that would have been that, but it wasn’t.
Dyson was brought before a European Tour disciplinary hearing, he received a £30,000 fine ordered to pay £7,500 in costs and has a 2 month ban suspended for 18 months.
Worse than any fine or ban though is that Dyson is now branded a cheat, that will never go away.
But the disciplinary board said “There is no history of misconduct on the part of Mr Dyson during his 14 years on Tour; In fact, as the panel found, that Mr Dyson’s conduct on the occasion in question involved a momentary aberration on his part, not a premeditated act of cheating; “
In laymen’s terms? He missed an easy putt, was annoyed and tapped the spike mark out of pure reaction not deliberate. Well that’s as I read it.
Now many of those who I respect in golf, Denis Pugh being one thinks the disciplinary committee got it right. Quite frankly Denis has forgotten more about golf than I will ever know and he is a man I truly respect.
For me I think the punishment does not fit the crime.
I think the disqualification was enough, unless there’s more to this than we, the public know.
Was Dyson’s error any worse than Tiger’s or Monty’s ?
Or how about Jose Manuel Lara ??
You can look that one up because it will take to long to explain!
Either there is more to this than meets the eye or the European Tour are drawing a line in the sand for future infringements by others?
Either way its going to interesting to see what happens the next time any, and I mean ANY, player breaks the rules.
