George Duncan

Who won the 1st ever singles point for GB in the Ryder Cup?

Who was the 1st ever winning Ryder Cup captain for GB ??

Do you know?

It was a man called George Duncan who won the 1920 Open Championship at Royal Cinque Ports.

George came from Old Meldrum in Aberdeenshire, for those out side this are it will probably mean nothing, but Old Meldrum is basically a small rural village in Aberdeenshire, in the heart of farming country but his father was the local policeman.

George was born there in 1883 and became an apprentice carpenter and was apparently a really good footballer who was given a chance to turn professional with Aberdeen.

He won the Belgian Open in 1912, French Open & News Of the World Match play in 1913, then the French and Irish Opens in 1927.

He played in the 1st 3 Ryder Cups 1927, 1929 & 1931.

He only played in 4 US Opens with a best finish of 6th at Skokie in 1922.

To George Duncan 2 hours was a long round! I think this is an Aberdonian thing.

At 17, yes 17, he became a club pro at Rhos-On-Sea in Wales, which must have been a huge step into the unknown in those days.

As far as I can find out he tooks a pro’s job a Mere Golf Club in Cheshire in 1934 and seen of his working life there.

He died in Leeds in 1964 aged 81.

Outside that there seems to be very little known of or about him.

This is a true golfing legend and this is basically all I can find out, is it just me or does that seem plain crazy.

No plaques, statues or memorials that I am aware of!

I ask all reading this to PLEASE retweet it.

I am desperate to learn more about this man, in fact we all should, surely he deserves it ?
