The late Bill Shankly once said “some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, mich more important than that.”
I never took that quote seriously, I always thought Shankly had his tongue firmly in his cheek when he said it, I am very much in the minority with that thought.
But Shankly said it when footballers had very little in the way of material worth, he said it when footballers earned about the average wage, not like today’s sports stars.
Back then players played with a lot more pride than they do now.
But that’s not only football that’s every sport.
I like Dottie Pepper, I like Dottie Pepper because she says what she thinks and wears her heart on her sleeve.
Dottie Pepper said what a lot of people thought after the Solheim Cup but were too politically correct or scared to stay.
From the out set I said Europe had a better team spirit and would put up a better fight than the US media thought, well I was wrong! About the better fight bit.
If the US team had spent less time on their nails and “you cant see me” shenanigans and more time putting the result would have been different.
Too many on the US thought the cup was theirs before it started, got over confident and treated Europe with very little respect.
I am not caring what sport you play, as soon as you stop respecting your opponent you lose.
Now you might say that’s a false statement from me ? Well ask yourself this: Why spend so much time practising and choreographing your celebrations ??
And one or two of the US team paid a heavy price for over celebrating!
Now don’t get me wrong I am not saying that everyone turns into Jason Dufner, please don’t.
But going as far over the top as some of the girls did was ridicules.
For Killeen 2011 read The Belfry 1985, for Parker 2013 read Muirfield Village 1987.
On Sunday night almost every tweet on my twitter feed was about the Solheim Cup very few about the PGA event that was going on.
Europe though were not the real winners on Sunday, ladies golf is the real winner.
All of a sudden people who would never normally watch an LPGA or an LET event were watching, tweeting, talking about it.
The LPGA were quick of the mark too, Charley Hull straight into the CN Canadian Woman’s Open and basically invited to join the LPGA, yes I know technically it was not an invite BUT!!!
Lets get the Solheim Cup up to Archerfield for the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open, lets get the fans along to see it and an LET event.
Lets get the media along, TV, Radio and written press to see it, lets get every golf publication there too!
Will that happen??
Lets all cross out fingers that it does, because lets be honest, the Ladies deserve it!
